Select Your Conflict

"You're a Meanie Geanie!" It was the ultimate insult hurled across the room when my brother and I were mad at each other. I don't even remember the three other names but I remember there were a total of four classifications for unacceptable sibling behavior. Meanie Geanie was reserved for the most despicable.

Clearly I did not grow up in a house of fighters. We are stuffers. We are card carrying members of the Conflict Avoider Club. We sweep issues behind large pieces of furniture where they are safely hidden with dust bunnies and can't be seen or discussed.

Whether we lock it under the key of our heart or blab about it on aisle three of the local supermarket, we all have stuff. Whether we avoid it like an IRS audit or post it proudly on our front door, we all have stuff. For years we’ve either fought or fled.

Fight or flight. Science will tell us those are the only options. I flee conflict like it’s the bubonic plague. Others get in there are fight to the death. What if there was a third option? Engagement.

No I’m not talking about the flowery kind that ends with a ring on your hand that reflects light around your car and screams, “He loves me!” I’m referring to engaging your heart and mind in the midst of conflict.

Hope for the “Flight Attendant”

Those of us whose natural inclination is to avoid conflict at all costs I call flight attendants. The moment we sense a conversation or situation beyond our control we disengage. We offer our opponent their choice of coffee, tea or milk – whatever is required to settle the situation and return to peace.

To engage, the Flight Attendant must make a conscious choice to stay and decide to love their opponent enough to speak what dwells in the cavern of the heart. Those words won’t come easily but the choice to speak will take your friendship, marriage or family relationship to a deeper level than we dreamed possible.

Hope for the “Bookie”

Some of us revel in conflict. We enjoy a good fight so much we’ll even take bets on it. We bet on ourselves to win every time. Whether our war is words or wounds we dish out the worst. Instead of being engaged, we become enraged.

To engage, the Bookie must throttle back the emotion and see the person before them through the filter of love. With love in the forefront, the Bookie must choose to stop talking, listen and draw out the depth of the other. In the end we will “win” as we see our relationships enriched.

What about you? Are you a Flight Attendant, a Bookie or a concoction of the two? Wherever we currently land, we can choose a new conflict style – engagement. No longer will we lay awake at night and stew of the conflict not taken. No longer will we live with the regret of reckless words. Instead our emotional well-being will blossom as our relationships become deeper, richer, meaningful.

Plant Workers

Peacemakers who sow in peace, raise a harvest of righteousness.
James 3:18

"I'm really sorry." I muttered it three times in less than two minutes. She had messed up my drive thru order but I was apologizing. The words came easily, without effort. I did not want to leave my passing encounter with her angry at me. Why did I feel the need to profusely apologize? More importantly, why I am so quick to apologize to a stranger and so slow to seek forgiveness from my loved ones?

I want to sow the seeds of peace within my home. I want the halls of my home to ring with harmony. I want to raise a harvest of righteousness.

Preparation

Just as the fields are prepared prior to planting so must my heart be prepared for peace. That preparation begins with Jesus over orange juice. It is my secret time with Him early in my day that tunes my heart strings toward harmony.

Planting

Like seeds dropped in fertile ground, I plant into the hearts of my family each day. Sometimes what lands there is contentious and provocative. When I first prepare my heart, I plant peace.

Pampering

Have you ever noticed how gardeners nurture their crop with tenderness. They diligently monitor for signs of illness, pests and drought. I need to invest the same care into my relationships.

I was so quick to heal wounds with a stranger. Greater care should be given those I love - I shouldn't just be quick to offer my apologies; I should be quick to offer my forgiveness. When you freely offer forgiveness, you harvest harmony.

Every one of us will drive thru today. Our stop at the window of our loved one's souls will plant in their hearts because we're all plant workers. Will we plant strife or peace?

What is one healthy way you heal relationships in your home?

What Lies Ahead

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,
I press on to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Phillipians 3:13-14

Me and My Sweetie pre-run;
I'm smiling because it's PRE-run - ha!
Pre-run jitters danced in my stomach. I took a deep breath and the initial steps of my first half marathon. The course was arduous. As soon as I topped one hill, another loomed ahead. Early on I knew finishing would be a far greater challenge than I had envisioned.

Out on the road it was just me and God. I prayed. I sang in my heart. I thought about scripture. What I didn't do was look back. It does no good to look back at the ground you've covered. When you run, what matters is what lies ahead.

I did it again. I took a sharp tone with my daughter. Regret immediately followed. I prayed for God's help. I asked her forgiveness. I didn't look back but at what lies ahead.

The memory came back in a terrifying dream. I laid shaking in the bed as I inched closer to my husband. I called out to God for His peace. I didn't look back but at what lies ahead.

Too often we stay trapped in condemnation, guilt and fear because our necks are craned on ground we've already covered.

Look forward, friend. Because of Who runs with you, ahead lies peace. Ahead is joy.

Forget what is behind and press on toward what is ahead.

My Hope

Today I have the joy of bringing you another exceptional guest post. This one is written from the perspective of the innkeeper's wife and it touches my heart in a place that is real and raw. I know you will love it as much as I do and will want to read so much more of her heart here.

I hear them whispering.

I don't dare join them- in case they are right- but it is hard not to hear their gossip, their questions, their accusations.

"...only pledged, not married..."

"...angels spoke.... that's likely"

"...should be ashamed..."

"...surprised he stayed..."

When she left town to visit relatives – suddenly and without a word – we all wondered, but it's not unusual to visit one's cousins. Then the whispers traveled back towards town, "Elizabeth is with child."

We were shocked beyond speech – it was rumored Zechariah was too, if the gossips could be believed.

It seemed unlikely that the story was true. Whispers of Abraham and his Sarah echoed, truth entwined with the obvious fabrication of wives and mothers with nothing better to do than to speak of others'
concerns as if they were a children's tale. And then...

It became apparent rather quickly that Elizabeth's rumored blessing was not going to be the biggest news on market day anymore...

As we have traveled these dusty roads toward David's city, ruled by Caesar and the census call, I've struggled – wanting ask her, wanting to amble beside her, as we used to in our childhood, at our mothers' sides at the market, in the fields; wishing I could share my news without the fear of the gossips that travel the same path, the same pace:

"Mary, I believe you."
"Mary, I'm scared for you."
"Mary, does Joseph really believe you?"

"Mary, I am pregnant, too. I am scared. I feel ill. The way is so long, the travel bothersome, the smells overwhelming, the food unpalatable...

"Mary, how do you look so peaceful?"

I am afraid to ask. Although their contract has been signed and Joseph calls her wife, the gossips continue. They whisper of angel's words and YHWH's blessing.

Why isn't she terrified?

What does she know that we do not?

Where does her hope lie?

Where can I get even a piece of the peace she has?

As she rubs her large belly, when no one is looking, Joseph lays his hand on hers. They share a secret smile and I feel the intruder as a moment passes between them. There is a spark I've never felt, a joy I've never known.

Where does their hope lie?

When news comes days later, shared over the rattle of carts and the braying of donkeys, I learn that her Hope was laid in a feeding trough.

I ignore my fear, and among the shepherds and animals I gain the strength to ask her.

Her tired smile is serene, her eyes sparkle with joy,
"My hope is in YHWH. My Hope is YHWH."

Day 30 of Prayer Guide - Peace for Your Body

Day Thirty
Peace for Your Body

Proverbs 14:30a A heart at peace gives life to the body.

A cough overstays his welcome. Energy eludes despite nap and extended sleep. These hallmarks shout your status: Tired.

Restless one, come obtain peace for your body.

Today I Pray for You:

·         To know the Rest Who penetrates first heart and then body.
·         To know the Way and comprehend the Truth that is a Life of peace.

Today You Pray:

Alpha and Omega, as I come to the end of my prayer journey, I realize it’s a beginning. You have flooded my mind, soul, heart and body with all of You and I want more.

You have proven to be all I need – sufficient for every trying moment of my day. Today I give You my body. With every beat of my heart, massage Your life-giving peace deep inside. My heart is at home in Your hands and gives my body the life it craves.

Day 29 of Prayer Guide - Peace for Your Mind

Day Twenty Nine
Peace for Your Mind

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Confused. Exhausted. “Your mind is playing tricks on you,” a friend offers. Only is doesn’t feel like play. Your head is crammed with details more war than play. You long for your brain to just be still.

Stressed one, come draw peace for your mind.

Today I Pray for You:

·         To draw on the bottomless well of God’s peace.
·         To trust the Guard of both heart and mind Whose peace is fathomless.

Today You Pray:

Restorer God, I empty my mind so it can be filled with You. Stand sentry at its door. Guard it with Your love and grace.

I tuck my mind into Your hands – hands of mercy and strength. In the safety of Your garrison, the warring calls a truce. My mind is stilled behind the shield of Your peace.

Day 28 of Prayer Guide - Peace for Your Soul

Day Twenty Eight
Peace for Your Soul

Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.

“When peace like a river attendeth my way…” Words sang in childhood still echo in your soul. Today they raise questions rather than nostalgia. When and how does peace come around? The old hymn presumed its visitation but peace hasn’t passed by the home of your soul in some time.

Conflicted one, come inherit peace for your soul.

Today I Pray for You:

·         For the God of hope to gently attend to the tender places of your soul, leaving joy and peace by His touch.
·         To encounter Peace Who empowers comfort with His quiet assurance, “It is well.”

Today You Pray:

Comforter, You are well appointed with my sorrows. Some are everyday aggravations who rob me of peace one irritation at a time. Others are deep wounds that tighten my throat and snatch joy.

Today I release every disappointment into Your hands. Fill my now empty soul with the river of Your peace. I receive Your gift as it pours into every crevice of my hidden self. In these moments I whisper to You, peace attends my way. It is well with my soul.

Day 27 of Prayer Guide - Peace for Your Heart

Day Twenty Seven
Peace for Your Heart

Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.

I am swallowed by my anxiety. It moves over my heart in waves, washing away my peace as it gurgles within. My heart longs for the peace of my Prince.

Striving one, come corral peace for your heart.

Today I Pray for You:

·         That you would journey to the throne of the One whose scepter is peace.
·         To know the rule that breaks the bondage of anxiety.

Today You Pray:

Provider God, I open my heart to You. Where You walk, trouble is stilled. The very brush of You entreats my heart to the pause of peace.

The door of my heart is thrown wide. Rule, Prince of Peace.

Day 26 of Prayer Guide - Peace

Day Twenty Six
Peace

Isaiah 32:17 The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence.

I long for peace but it eludes me. I’ve been told to chase after what I want but somewhere midstride I realize peace isn’t something I can catch. Peace is Someone Who gives to me what He is.

Distressed one, come drain peace into your being.

Today I Pray for You:

·         That the Prince of Peace would crown your heart with peace.
·         To surrender your drained soul to the One who drains peace.

Today You Pray:

My Shelter, I hide in You. Here in this place of rest and security, I give my frightened heart over to You. To finish well, I must walk in the peace only You can give.

Some trust in money. Some trust in relationships. I trust in You – the One who gives a quiet confidence and peace.

Rest for Your Mind - Day Four of Prayer Guide

Day Four
Rest for Your Mind

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.

Your usually organized thoughts jump one to the other like a pinball machine.  At moments you can’t distinguish where one thought ends and another begins.  Life seems like an endless train never reaching the station.  Frazzled one, come receive rest for your mind.

Today I Pray for You:

·         To focus your mind on the most important tasks and lay unnecessary things aside

·         To declutter your schedule and find spots of sweet serenity and hear from the One who loves you.

Today You Pray:

Prince of Peace, I slide my mind into Your hand. Reign there and eradicate the strain. Invade my brain with Your serenity.  Gather my scattered thoughts to Your heart.

Help me free my calendar and my mind to enjoy these days of preparation. I focus my mind on You, Prince of Peace. I trust You with every detail. My mind is set free by Your perfect peace.
